[edit] How to find it
Findsee map:[2] Omikron Herculis. Some 3° to the Nsee map:[1], in the center of a isosceles triangle of stars formed by 104 Her, HD 165683 and HD 166180, is DoDz 9.
[edit] Appearance
The cluster is weakly detached from the stellar background, but not concentrated. Only part of the stars in the area of the cluster are actual members, and it is hard to discerne members from non-members.
Brightest members are divided into 2 groups, one in the north and one in the south. Together with some slightly dimmer star, they form rough circular pattern. The center is almost empty of stars.
Magnitude range od stars is 8.5 - 11.[3]
Best seen between 30x and 60x.
[edit] 60-mm (2.5") telescopes and 9x63 binoculars
The cluster is easily seen in 60-mm telescope as a diffuse group of about 15 stars, scattered over 30' area. There is no increase in concentration of dimmer stars[4]
In 9x63 binoculars, the cluster is large (around 30'), but not very bright. Around 14 stars can be resolved, some with direct vision, and 2 of them very bright. Averted vision makes this cluster much more dense.[5]
[edit] 8" and 10" telescopes
In 8" or 10" telescopes, at powers between 30x and 65x, cluster is ring-shaped, with almost empty center. Expect to see between 25 and 45 stars, depending on limiting magnitude, magnification and other parameters.[6][7][8][4]
Many stars are arranged in pair and trios[6]. No stars show strong colors.[8]
[edit] Telescopes above 15"
An 16" telescope might show up to 50 stars.[9]
Some star colors can be noticed in 18" telescope.[10]
[edit] Notes
Asterism Markov 1 is 4° to the SW, just 15' NW of 3.7-mag Xi (92) Hercules.
